Velvet Sky is a low-cost airline, which will initially be operating between Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town, offering a safe and reliable service to business and leisure travellers in the domestic air travel market.

Established in 2008 by a diverse group of local businessmen, Velvet Sky is South Africa’s first 100% Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) airline company.

Following on the success of the 2010 World Cup and the movement of the financial world out of recession, the increased volume of air passengers has led us to believe that the market is ready for a new player. According to statistics released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the South African air travel market is expanding rapidly after the global economic recession of the last 2 years, this has resulted in a lower initial CAPEX cost which can therefore be passed on to the clients in the form of lower fares without lowering any standards. The increased number of current air passengers, have led both organisations to forecast positive growth in the commercial aviation market in coming years.

Velvet Sky will be operating the acclaimed Boeing 737 series which have been sourced from international aircraft leasing company, Aergo. These modern planes have been arranged in cost effective 148-seater all-economy configuration. The Boeing 737 is currently the world’s most largely produced airliner. The fleet will be maintained by the most advanced aircraft maintenance provider on the African continent, SAA Technical. Velvet Sky has already achieved South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approval as well as the Air Services Licence and have confidently passed the relevant South African safety benchmarks which are acknowledged as being amongst the most stringent in the world.

Although Velvet Sky is entering the market as a low-cost airline, passengers can expect a continuing element of surprise, personal service and a commitment to reliability that will differentiate them. The inaugural flight will take off from OR Tambo on 22 March 2011 on the Johannesburg/Durban route, with the Johannesburg/Cape Town route following shortly afterwards.
